Desires of the Dead by Kimberly Derting
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Violet and Jay are back in another page turning mystery. While hanging out in Seattle with her friend Chelsea, Violet begins to feel the pull of the dead. It leads her to the docks and the body of a young child. Because she reported the crime, the FBI have taken an interest in her, and now she must decided to reveal her abilities or keep them a secret. To top it all off, someone is leaving her threatening messages, that could put both her and her relationships in danger.
I will start off this review by stating it is going to be a gushy one! I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this book--in fact I finished it in one day! I am usually a very slow reader, unless it is a book that really hooks me. Desires of the Dead did that; I couldn't put it down. Derting is a master storyteller, keeping you on the edge of your seat and always wanting more. She build suspense throughout the novel carefully upping the stakes with each encounter.
Derting's characters are well drawn. They are realistic, likable, and you can really believe in them and their actions. Violet's conflicts about keeping her abilities a secret felt right. She wanted to tell people, but she wasn't sure who she could trust. I found myself wishing Violet would confide more in the people around her, but I could understand why she wanted to keep things to herself.
I also liked how Violet's relationship with Jay grew throughout the novel. Before they dated they had been best friends who told each other everything, but now they are dating somethings have changed, and both must struggle to find their place in the relationship.
I love how the suspense and danger grew as the novel progressed. Just when you think you have it figured out, you discover that you only have part of the puzzle. While I did figure out the ending before we got there, I can't say that I was disappointed with the journey.
Desires of the Dead is the sequel to Derting's debut book, The Body Finder. If you haven't read The Body Finder I recommend that you pick that one up first. There are several references to events that happened in The Body Finder in this book, so being familiar with the first will definitely be helpful.
The only thing that truly disappointed me about this book is that now I have to wait for Derting to write the next one. Let me tell you, I will stand in line to buy it! Kudos to a very talented author!
