Notes from Ghost Town by Kate Ellison
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Artist Olivia Tithe loved her best friend Lucas Stern, but she discovered this love too late. After one kiss that tears them apart, Olivia is shocked to find out that Stern has been murdered. Unfortunately, the murderer is Olivia’s own mother. More than that, since that kiss, Olivia has been unable to see color. Failing out of art school, facing the upcoming trial, and trying to move on with her life without her one true love leaves Olivia unraveled, and feeling that she, like her mother, might be losing her mind. When she starts seeing, and speaking with Stern, she knows her sanity is next to go. Can she save herself, or is she destined to end up like her mother?
Notes from Ghost Town is a novel that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Olivia Tithe wants to be an ordinary teen, but she has so many problems, she can’t find ordinary any where in her life. Her mother is on trial for the murder of her best friend and first love. Olivia believes that she too is teetering at the edge of sanity, and when she starts seeing the ghost of her dead best friend, she feels like she has fallen over that edge.
I love how this novel keeps you wondering if Olivia is losing her mind, or if something else is happening here. I liked Olivia, and she felt like a real teen to me. She is someone whose heart is broken, and is searching for some solace in her life. She is trying to put her life back together, when so much has fallen apart.
The pacing of the novel is well done. It does slow a bit in the middle, but the fast pacing in the beginning makes this an easy novel to get into, and the details of the mystery keep you hooked even in the slower parts.
Overall, this book was a great mystery that held my interest until the very last page. With a likably lost main character, and a charming ghost, this was a hard novel to put down. I love Ellison's writing style, and will definitely have to make time to pick up her first novel The Butterfly Clues!

Kate Ellison is the critically acclaimed author of The Butterfly Clues. She spent a lot of time as a child, in Baltimore, pretending to be things she wasn't: a twin, a telekinetic, a benevolent witch with a box full of magical stones, a spy, a soccer player. She trained as an actor in Chicago and has walked across the entire country of Spain. She is a painter and jewelry-maker, and has at least one artist friend who really does keep his true name a secret from the world. He told her, but don't ask her to tell you—she's not gonna do it. Kate lives in Brooklyn, New York.
